Laos is officially known as the Lao People's Democratic Republic which is often called LPDR in short. It is a landlocked country which is located in Southeast Asia and shares its borders on the northwest by People’s Republic of China and Burma, Vietnam on the east, Thailand on the west and Cambodia to the south. Since the year 1975, Laos has been ruled by a communist and Marxist government. The population of the country was estimated to be around 6.8 million as of July 2014. The history of Laos can be traced back to the kingdom of LanXang that existed from the 14th to the 18th century. However, in 1893, it became a French protectorate resulting in the formation of three kingdoms which were united later to form what is known as Laos today. The country gained independence in 1945 for a brief period of time but returned to French rule until 1949 when it was granted autonomy. In 1953, Laos became independent with a constitutional monarchy which was put to an end after a prolonged civil war. Laos is known to be a single-party socialist republic. It adopts Marxism and is governed by a single party communist which is dominated by military generals. The Vietnam People’s Army and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam have quite a bit of influence in Laos. Vientiane is the capital city of the country and the official language is Lao. It is also a multi-ethnic country with the culturally and politically dominant Lao people that comprise of 60% of the population approximately and other indigenous hill tribes, account for remaining40%.This country has some strategies which can help in it development. The strategy is based on generation of electricity using the rivers in the country and then selling the power to its neighbouring countries like China, Vietnam and Thailand. With the demands for its metal, the economy of Laos is accelerating rapidly. Laos is a member of East Asia Summit, the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement along with Association of Southeast Asian Nations and La Francophonie. Laos is also a member of WTO or World Trade Organization since 2013. However, as per the anti-corruption non-governmental organization Transparency International, this country is still considered to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world which has created major issues and problems with the rule of law and deterred foreign investment. Laos has a low income economy and ranks 138th in the Human Development Index.
