Kyrgyzstan was formerly known as Kirghizia and is situated in Central Asia. This country is a mountainous and landlocked country. Kyrgyzstan shares its borders to its north by Kazakhstan,China to its east, Uzbekistan to the west and Tajikistan to the southwest. Bishek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan and is also its largest city. The history of Kyrgyzstan can be traced back to 2000 years ago. This country had encompassed several empires and a variety of cultures. Its geographical feature especially its mountainous terrain keeps it isolated which helps the country to preserve its ancient culture. This nation has been at the crossroads of various great civilizations. Kyrgyzstan has been inhabited for a long time by a succession of independent clans and tribes and due to its strategic location, attaining sovereignty as a nation-state after the dissolution of Soviet Union in the year 1991. Ever since Kyrgyzstan got its independence, it has been a unitary parliamentary republic, officially even though it still endures ethnic conflicts, economic troubles and revolts along with political party and transitional governments conflicts. It is a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the TÜRKSOY community among a few others. The population of Kyrgyzstan is estimated to be around 5.7 million out of which Ethnic Kyrgyz make up the majority which is followed by the significant minorities of Russians and Uzbeks. Kyrgyz is the official language of the country and is closely related to the other Turkic languages. 64 percent of the population are nondenominational Muslims.Apart from its Turkic origins, the culture of this nation also bears elements of Russian, Persian and Mongolian influence. The Central Bank of Kyrgyzstan is known to be the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic. In the former Soviet Union, Kyrgyzstan was considered to be the second poorest country and today is still the second poorest country in Central Asia. According to the CIA World Factbook, one third of the country's population lived below the poverty line as of 2011. UNDP states that the level of poverty is likely to grow on the basis of the statistics according to which in the year 2009 31% of the population lived below the poverty level which rose to 37 % in 2011. The government however is trying its best to transition the economy to a market economy. With the help of economic reforms and stabilization, the government wants to establish a pattern of consistent and long term economic growth. Agriculture is an essential sector of the economy and as of 2012, agriculture accounted for 35.6% of GDP and employed half of the population in Kyrgyzstan.
