Kazakhstan is officially known as the Republic of Kazakhstan and is a country that is located in Central Asia, with a minor part in the western side of the Ural River and thus in Europe. It is considered to be the largest landlocked country in the world by land area and world’s ninth largest country. Total land area covered by Kazakhstan is reported to be around 2,724,900 square kilometers which is larger than Western Europe. It is bordered by Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, clockwise from the north. Apart from that it also borders a large part of the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan has a wide variety of terrains such as flatlands, deserts, rock canyons, steppe, taiga, hills, deltas and snow-capped mountains. As of 2013, its population was estimated to be about 17 million people and the country is known to be the world’s 61st most populous country. However, the population density of this country is among the lowest. Previously, the capital of Kazakhstan was Almaty but in 1997, it was moved to Astana. This country has been inhabited by the nomadic tribes in the beginning which was followed by Genghis Khan’s reign in the 13th century. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the year 1991, Kazakhstan declared independence. It was the last of the Soviet Republican countries to do so. Since its independence, the country maintains a balanced foreign policy simultaneously working to develop the economy of the country alongside. It has focused on its hydrocarbon industry in particular which happens to be a dominant industry in the region. There are almost 131 ethnicities in this country and 70 percent of the population follows Islam. Kazak is the official language of the country but Russia also enjoys equal status for all kinds of institutional as well as administrative purposes. The country allows its people to enjoy freedom of religion and 26 percent of the population practices Christianity. The economy of this country is believed to have grown by 4.6% recently and has been growing at an average rate of 8 percent annually for the past decade. Kazakhstan has the strongest as well as the largest performing economy in Central Asia. It was the first former Soviet Republic to repay all its debt seven years ahead of its schedule to the International Monetary Fund. The GDP of this country started rising since the year 2010 and it was estimated to be between 8.9% to 13.5% from the years 2000 to 2007 but then decreased to 1–3% in the years 2008 and 2009.
