Located in the southern region of the Indochina Peninsula of Southeast Asia, Cambodia was formerly known as Khmer Empire and now known officially as Kingdom of Cambodia. The total area covered by the country is estimated around 181,035 kilometers. The country shares its border with Vietnam to the east, Laos to the northeast, Thailand to the northwest and Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. The population of the country is approximately 15 million making it the country 69th most populous country in the world. The 95 percent of the population of this country practices the official religion which is Theravada Buddhism. Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia and is also the largest city along with being the political, cultural and economic center of Cambodia. In 802 A.D, the declaration of Jayavarman II as the king resulted in beginning of Khmer Empire period which lasted for the next 600 years or may be more. This Indianized kingdom had built temples and spread Hinduism followed by Buddhism to most parts of the Southeast Asia. In 1863, the country became the protectorate of France and finally became independent in the year 1953. Some of the prominent challenges and problems that this country faces include lack of political freedom, poverty, high rate of hunger, corruption and low human development. David Roberts who is the Human Right Watch’s Southeast Asian director describes the country as a vaguely communist free market state which has a relatively authoritarian coalition ruling over a superficial democracy. Despite of the low income economy, the country has still managed to keep a record of one of the best economies in Asia with an average growth of 6 percent over the last decade. Agriculture plays the most essential role in the growth of the country’s economy. But there are other sectors that contribute to the growth of the country’s economy to a great extent as well such as garments, tourism, textiles, construction which ultimately leads to international trade and an increase in foreign investment. Per capita income of Cambodia was reported to be 2,470 dollars in PPP and 1,040 dollars in nominal per capita. Even though the country’s per capita income is increasing rapidly but it is still quite low compared to other countries. Tourism plays a vital role and China to be the biggest source of FDI for Cambodia. The National Bank of Cambodia is the central bank of the country and since 2010, the numbers of microfinance institutions and regulated banks increased in the country.
