Bangladesh which is officially known as People’s Republic of Bangladesh is a South Asian country. In terms of population, the country is known to be 8th most populous country in the world with a population of more than 160 million people. The country can be divided into three main regions. The dominance of Ganga-Brahmaputra delta can be felt quite strongly all along the country. The central and north western parts of the country are formed by Barind and Madhupur Plateaus. Hill ranges can be seen mostly in the south eastern and north eastern parts of the country. The country has 57 trans-boundaries rivers. The history of Bangladesh can be traced back to the Stone Age in 3rd Millennium B.C. The Islamic influence was introduced to Bengal during the 7th century before which Pala dynasty made a huge impact in terms of art and culture on the country as it ruled for several hundred years. In 1947, the country was aligned to Pakistan and was known as East Pakistan but due to linguistic, ethnic differences and economical negligence among other reasons, Bangladesh was declared an Independent country after the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. Bangladesh is known to be 11th developing nation and has a per capita income of 1,190 USD and an economy of 175 USD. The currency of Bangladesh is known as ‘Taka’. The agricultural sector of the country constitutes for about 18% of the GDP, the industrial sector accounts for 30% and finally the service sector with a 50% of GDP. The country happens to be a global agricultural producer of rice, jute, fisheries, tropical fruits and tea. 70 percent of the export earnings come from the country’s textile industry as Bangladesh is the fourth largest textile exporter. In Asia, it is the seventh largest producer of natural gas as well. Since the year 2004, the country has seen a growth in its economy by 6%. It has twin stock exchanges and has one of the largest financial industries in South Asia. Since independence, Bangladesh has gradually become less and less dependent on the foreign aid which was approximately 85% in 1988 but was measured 2% in 2010. The fastest growing telecomm industry and the microfinance sector have contributed immensely in the improvement of the country’s economy. Transport also plays an equal essential role in contributing to the country’s economy as the country has 2,076 rail network and one of the largest waterway networks in the world. The Chittagong port is responsible for carrying out 80% of the export and import trade of the country and is believed to handle 60 billion USD in annual trade.
