Suriname is officially known as the Republic of Suriname. It is a sovereign state that is located on the north eastern Atlantic coast of South America. Suriname is bordered to its east by French Guiana, Brazil on the south, Guyana on the west. Suriname is considered to be the smallest country in South America with a total land area of 155,000 square kilometers. The total population of the country is somewhat recorded to be approximately 566,000. Most of the people reside on the north coast of the country along with in and around the capital. Paramaribo is the largest city as well as the capital of the country. The country was inhabited initially by a number of indigenous tribes. The country was contested and explored by the European powers during the late 17th century. In the year 1975, the country of Suriname became an independent state after it discarded the kingdom of the Netherlands. Even then, Suriname managed to maintain diplomatic and close economic along with cultural ties its former colonizer. Being a member of the Caribbean community, Suriname is also considered to be a culturally Caribbean country. Dutch is the most predominant language of the country. In fact, it is the only independent country in the entire Americas where the majority of the population speaks Dutch. The residents of this country are known to be among the most diverse in the world who are also known for spanning a multitude of religious, ethnic and linguistic groups. The democracy of the country garnered strength after the turbulence of 1990’s. After 1990’s, the economy of the country became less dependent on Dutch financial assistance and more diversified. When it comes to strong revenue first, bauxite mining continues to lead. The exploitation as well as the discovery of gold and oil has substantially added to the economic independence of the country as well. Agriculture including bananas and rice has remained the strong contributor of the economy. Eco-tourism of Suriname, in recent years, has provided endless opportunities in terms of economy. More than 80% of the landmass comprises unspoiled rain forest which led to the establishment of the Central Suriname Nature Reserve in the year 1998. The country has shown its dedication along with commitment in conservation of natural reserve. In the year 2000, the Central Suriname Nature Reserve became a world heritage site as well. Bauxite industry, single handedly accounts for 70% of the export earnings and 15% of GDP, thereby dominating the economy of the country.
