Mexico is known as a federal republic and is located in North America. Mexico is bordered by the United States on the north, on the west and south by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by the Gulf of Mexico and on the southeast by Belize, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea. The country covers almost two million square kilometers and it is believed to be the fifth largest country in the Americas in terms of the total area along with being the 13th largest independent nation in entire world. With a population of more than 113 million, Mexico is also considered to be the eleventh most populous in the world and world’s most populous Spanish-speaking country apart from being the second most populous country in Latin America. Mexico is a federation and comprises of a Federal District which is its capital as well as the largest city of the country along with thirty-one states. In 1521, Mexico was colonized as well as conquered by the Spanish Empire which eventually became Mexico following recognition of the colony's independence in the year 1821. However, the period after post-independence period was characterized by the Mexican-American war, a civil war, Pastry War and the Franco-Mexican war that led to economic instability, two empires and a domestic dictatorship. The latter led to the Mexican Revolution in the year 1910, which ended with the declarationof the 1917 Constitution and emerged into the country's current political system. Mexico is believed to have one of the largest economies in the world. In terms of oil production, it is world’s tenth largest oil producer apart from being the largest silver producer in the world and is considered both a middle as well as regional power. In addition to that, this country was also the first Latin American member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and was considered to be an upper-middle income country according to the World Bank. Mexico is a newly industrialized country and also an emerging power. In terms of nominal GDP, it has the fifteenth largest and the tenth largest GDP in terms of purchasing power parity. Mexico has membership in some of the prominent institutions like G20, Uniting for Consensus, WTO and the UN. According to Goldman Sachs, by the year 2050, Mexico can become the fifth largest economy in the entire world and as per PricewaterhouseCoopers estimation; it could be the seventh largest economy in the world by 2013. Mexico ranks first in the Americas and sixth in the world by number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As of 2010, it was the tenth most visited country in the world.
