Guyana is officially known as the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. It is a sovereign state which is located on the South America’s Caribbean coast. Guyana is a part of the Anglophone Caribbean and isconsidered among the few Caribbean countries that are a part of South America. Guyana is the member of The Caribbean Community and has its secretariat's headquarters in Georgetown which is Guyana's capital. The region that was known historically as Guiana or Guyana comprises large shield of landmass across east of the Orinoco River and north of Amazon River. It is also known as “Land of Many Waters”. Modern Guyana is bordered by several countries such as Suriname to its east, Venezuela to its west, Brazil to its south and southwest and finally Atlantic Ocean to its north. The total land covered by the country is 215,000 square kilometers. Guyana is also considered the 3rd smallest independent state on the South American mainland. The country was originally colonized by the Netherlands after which it became a British colony and remained so for more than 150 years until it finally obtained its independence on the year 1966 from the United Kingdom. Guyana became a republic officially on 23 February in the year 1970. In the year 2008, Guyana joined the Union of South American Nations as a founding member. The country has the distinction of being the only South American nation where English is considered to be an official language. The country is also a member state of the Commonwealth of Nations. The main economic activities of this country include agriculture which mainly involves production of rice and Demerara sugar along with gold mining, bauxite mining, timber, minerals and shrimp fishing. The chronic problems faced by the country include a shortage of labourforce that is skilled and competent and a deficient infrastructure. In the year 2008, the economy of this country witnessed a 3% hike in growth amid the global economic crisis, showed an impressive hike of 5.4% in the year 2011 and 3.7% in 2012. The Government's tenuous fiscal position along with the dimmed prospects for the future were further threatened by low prices for agricultural commodities along with key mining and troubles in sugar and bauxite industries. But, on a brighter note, the economy of the country has rebounded a bit and has exhibited moderate economic growth as well since the year 1999. It was made possible due to an expansion in the mining as well as agricultural sectors, fairly low inflation, a more favourable atmosphere for business initiatives, support of international organizations on a constant basis and a more realistic exchange rate.
