Guatemala is officially known as the Republic of Guatemala. It is situated in Central America and is bordered by Mexico on the north and west, Belize on the northeast, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, and the Caribbean to the east along with El Salvador to the southeast and Honduras to the east. The population of the country is estimated to be around 15.8 million and is the most populous state in Central America. Guatemala is a representative democracy and Nueva Guatemala de la Asuncion is the largest city of the country as well as its capital which is also known as Guatemala City. In the 16th century Spanish conquered a large part of the region and the country became a part of the colony of New Spain which is known as Mexico at present. Guatemala got its independence in the year 1821 as part of the Federal Republic of Central America. The federal Republic of Central America dissolved in 1841. Since the mid to the late 19th century, the country has endured civil strife as well as chronic instability which was endemic to the region. In the beginning of the 20th century, the region was ruled by a series of dictators. One such dictator was overthrown by a pro-democratic military coup in 1944 which resulted into the ten-year Guatemalan Revolution that eventually led to the formation of social and economic reforms. Guatemala with a GDP per capita in PPP of $5,200 US dollars is considered to have the largest economy in Central America. But, the country faces a wide array of social problems and is also one of the poorest countries in Latin America. Guatemala is a developing nation and its distribution of income is highly unequal. More than half of the population of this country is below the national poverty line and about over 400,000 which constitute about 3.2% of the total population are unemployed. According to the CIA World Fact Book, about 54.0% of the population is considered to be living under poverty. The exporter sector of the country in the recent years in nontraditional products has grown dynamically and some of these products for export include fruits, flowers, vegetables, clothes, handicrafts and others.
