French Guiana is officially known to be Guiana. French Guiana is an overseas region and department and of France which is located on South America’s north Atlantic coast. The country is bordered by Brazil to the south and east and Suriname to the west. Total area covered by French Guiana is approximately about 83,534 square kilometers and the region has a very low population density. Half of the population is located in the metropolitan area of Cayenne which is also the capital of the country. Only 3 inhabitants per live per square kilometer. By land area, it is the largest overseas departments of France. As an overseas region, it is inside the European Union, and its official currency is the euro. The adjective "French" in English and in additionhas come from colonial times when five of such colonies existed such as Spanish Guiana is which now the Guayana Region in Venezuela, The Guianas from west to east, British Guiana which is now Guyana, Suriname which was Dutch Guiana French Guiana and finally Portuguese Guiana which happens to be known as Amapá, a state in far northern Brazil. French Guiana and Suriname along with Guyana that arethe two larger countries to the west and north are collectively referred quit often, still to as the Guianas and comprise one large shield landmass. Being an integral part of France, French Guiana is a part of the Eurozone and the European Union. The currency of the France is euro. As of 2012, the GDP of French Guiana was $4.90 billion US Dollars at market exchange rates.The country ranked 11th largest in South America and the largest economy in the Guianas. French Guiana depends heavily on mainland France for goods, trade and subsidies. The prominent traditional industries of the country are gold mining that constitute about 32 percent of exports as of 2012, fishing accounting for 5% exports and timber that accounts for only 1% of exports. In addition to that, since the establishment of Guiana Space Centre has played an essential role for the local economy. As of 2002, it accounted indirectly as well directly for 16% of French Guiana's GDP. The Guiana Space Centre was also responsible for employing 1,659 people in year 2012. As of 2012, the GDP per capita at market exchange rates of French Guiana not at PPP was recorded at $19,828 US dollars which was considered the highest in South America.
