Cuba is officially known as Republic of Cuba and is located in the Caribbean. Cuba consists of the main island of Cuba, several archipelagos and the Isla de la Juventud. The capital of Cuba is Havana which is also its largest city. Santiago de Cuba is the second largest city. Cuba shares its boundaries on the north with United States, Mexico on its west, Turks and Caicos Islands along with the Bahamas on the northeast, Dominican Republic and Haiti on the southeast and the Cayman Islands along with Jamaica on its south. Being the largest island in the Caribbean, Cuba has over 11 million inhabitants and is also considered second most populous country. It is also the only Marxist-Leninist state which has received a high ranking in human development from the United Nations and also has good ranking in education and health measures. Cuba is a multiethnic country where its culture, customs and traditions along with its people come from diverse origins. The aboriginal Taíno and Ciboney peoples, the introduction of African slaves, the long period of Spanish colonialism and finally sharing a close relationship with the Soviet Union during the Cold War have collectively made an impact on the culture and traditions of this country. Cuba remained a colony of Spain till the year 1898, after which Cuba obtained its nominal independence in 1902 as a de facto U.S. protectorate. In the year 1965 the country the Communist Party of Cuba started governing the nation. The socialist principles of the Cuban state help the country to organize its largely planned and state controlled economy. The labour force of the country is employed by the state and the means of production are run as well as owned by the government. In recent years, the employment was seen in private sectors mostly. The private sector employment was measured at 22 percent and the public sector employment was 78 percent. Any company or person who wishes to hire a Cuban is supposed to pay the Cuban government first so that the government then can pay the employees in pesos. The country has a dual currency system. Investment in the tourism infrastructure has resulted in positive outcomes. The country has exports worth of 2.4 billion dollars which has helped the country to get 114th rank out of 22 countries in the world. And as far as the imports ranking is concerned, Cuba has managed to get 87th rank out of 22 countries on the basis of the exports worth which comes up to $6.9 billion.
