This South American country occupies a narrow as well as long strip of land between Pacific Ocean to the west and Andes Mountains to the east. The country shares its borders with Peru on the north, Argentine on its east, Bolivia on the northeast and Drake Passage located in far south. The total land covered by the country is estimated to be approximately 1,250,000 square kilometers of Antarctica. The Atacama Desert which is located in the northern part of the country is believed to contain great mineral wealth especially copper. The central area is relatively small and dominates in terms of agricultural resources and population. It is also the political as well as cultural center from which the country expanded when it incorporated its southern and northern regions in the late 19th century. Southern part of the country is rich in grazing lands and forests and features a string of lakes and volcanoes. Spain conquered Chile in 16th century and colonized it. But after declaring its independence from Spain Chile was transformed into a stable authoritarian republic. Chile saw some significant economic and territorial growth in the 19h century. Chile is known to be one of South America's most prosperous as well as stable nations, today.[10] It leads the Latin American nations in human development rankings in terms of income per capita, competitiveness, globalization, economic freedom, state of peace, and finally low perception of corruption. The country is also a founding member of the Union of South American Nations, United Nations and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. The central bank of Chile is the central bank of the country and the currency of Chile is known as Chilean Peso. It is a developed country as the World Bank considers Chile as a high income economy. It’s economic freedom has resulted into prudent public finance management and efficient and independent judicial system. Chile became the country that has the highest GDP per capita in Latin America in 2006. Copper mining constitutes up to 60 percent of exports and 20 percent of Chilean GDP. Chile is the third producer of Copper in world. The economic policies of this country were maintained very consistently since the 1980’s. The economy of the country remained sluggish till the year 2003 but after that it showed sign of recovery and the GDP growth was marked at 4.0 %. According to a report Chile’s government welfare programs benefit about 64 percent of the overall population.
