South Africa is officially known as the Republic of South Africa. It is considered the southernmost country in Africa. It is bordered on its south by approximately 2,798 kilometers Southern Africa that stretches along Indian Ocean along with South Atlantic on the north by the neighboring countries of Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe and on the east, the country by Swaziland and Mozambique that surrounds the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is supposedly the 25th-largest country in the entire world in terms of land area. Total population of the country is around 53 million people. South Africa is also the 24th-most populous nation in the world. South Africa has a multiethnic society that encompasses a wide variety of languages, cultures and religions. Its diversesetup can beseen in the constitutions recognition of 11 official languages, which is known to be among the highest number of any country in the entire world. Two of these eleven languages include Afrikaans which was developed from Dutch and considered as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English is used in public and commercial life mostly but it is ranked fourth as a spoken first language. This country is among the very few countries where regular elections have been held for a century. About 80 percent of people in South Africa are of sub-Saharan African ancestry and the remaining population comprises of largest communities of European (white), Asian (Indian) along with multiracial (coloured) ancestry in Africa. Since the year 1994, all ethnic as well as linguistic groups have had political representation in the constitutional democracy of the country. While describing the countrys newly developing multicultural diversity, South Africa is often referred to as the ‘’rainbow nation”. World Bank has ranked South Africa as an upper-middle income economy and is also considered to be a newly industrialized country. The economy of this country is second-largest in Africa along with being 34th-largest in the world. South Africa has the seventh-highest per capita income in Africa. South Africa has maintained significant regional influence and is identified as a middle power in international affairs. South Africa has got a mixed economy and a relatively high GDP per capita when compared to other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Despite this, high rate of poverty and unemployment is still major drawbacks in the country. It is ranked among world’s top 10 countries for income inequality. According to World Bank research, it has been shown that the country has one of the widest gaps between per capita GNP versus its Human Development Index ranking.
