Sierra Leone is officially known as the Republic of Sierra Leone. It is a country located in West Africa which is bordered by Guinea on the north-east, Atlantic Ocean in the south-west and Liberia in the south-east. The country has a tropical climate which has a diverse environment that ranges from rainforests to savannah. The country has a total area of 71,740 square kilometers and total population of the country is 6 million. Freetown is considered to be a largest city as well as the capital of Sierra Leone. Freetown is also the political as well as economic center of the country. The second largest city of the country is Bo which is also the second major economic center in the country. Some of the other prominent cities in the country that have got a population more than 100,000 are Makeni, Kenemaand KoiduTown.Sierra Leone is mainly divided into 4 geographical regions such as Eastern Province, the Northern Province, Western Area and southern Province that can be further divided into fourteen districts.Approximately sixteen ethnic groups inhabit Sierra Leone and each one of these groups had their own customs as well as language. The largest and the most influential people were Temne and Mende. The Temne are mainly found in the north of the country whereas the Mende, in the south-east. Although English is known to be the official language and is spoken at government administrations as well as schools, the Krio language too is widely spoken in Sierra Leone. Krio is used between different ethnic groups in the country especially when they interact with each other or during trade. The country is basically a Muslim country and has an influential Christian minority alongside. The country is regarded as one of the most religiously tolerant nations in the entire world. Muslims and Christians interact as well collaborate with each other quite peacefully. Religious violence is not commonly seen in this country. Sierra Leone had always relied on mining, mainly diamonds for its economic base. The country is also among the largest producers of bauxite and titanium along with being a major producer of gold and also has one of the largest deposits of rutile in the world. Sierra Leone is also the home to the third-largest natural harbour in world. However, 70% of its people live in poverty. The country gained its independence in the year 1961 but the corruption and mismanagement of the natural resources by the Government contributed to the Sierra Leone Civil War that started in the 1991 and continued till 2002 and devastated the country. The civil war also degraded the economic conditions.
