Mozambique is officially known as the Republic of Mozambique. It is a country which is located in Southeast Africa and is bordered by the Indian Ocean on its east, Malawi as well as Zambia to on the northwest, Tanzania on the north, Zimbabwe to the west along with South Africa and to the southwest. It is separated from Madagascar on its east by the Mozambique Channel. The largest city as well as the capital of Mozambique is known as Maputo.The area was explored by Vasco da Gama in the year 1498 after which Portuguese colonized the territories from 1505. After being ruled for four centuries by Portuguese, Mozambique finally gained independence in the year 1975 and became the People's Republic of Mozambique shortly thereafter. However, Mozambique ranks among the lowest in GDP per capita, measures of inequality, human development, and average life expectancy. The official language of this country is Portuguese and half of the population of this country speaks this language as a second language. The country's population is around 24 million and most of the people are known to be Bantu people. The largest religion followed in this nation is Christianity. Significant minorities also follow Islam and African traditional religions. Mozambique is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, African Union, the Latin Union, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries and the Non-Aligned Movement along with the Southern African Development Community.The official currency of the country is the New Metical Mozambique is also a member of the Southern African Development Community. According to the International Monetary Fund in early 2007 Mozambique is a success story in Sub-Saharan Africa' Yet, despite the apparent success of the nation, both the UNICEF as well as the World Bank used the word 'paradox' to highlight the rising chronic child malnutrition in the face of GDP growth.
