Malawi is officially known to be the Republic of Malawi. It is a landlocked country and located in southeast Africa which was formerly known as Nyasaland. Malawi shares its borders by Mozambique on its east, west and south along with Zambia to the northwest and Tanzania to the northeast. Lake Malawi separates Mozambique and Tanzania from this country. The territory of Malawi is estimated to be over 118,000 square kilometers. It has an estimated population of 16,777,547 as of July 2013. The capital of Malawi, Lilongwe, is also its largest city. This country is often called by its nickname "The Warm Heart of Africa". This country happens to be one of the smallest countries in Africa and the Lake Malawi takes up about one third of the country’s area. Bantu groups first settled in this country around 10th century and centuries later, this region was colonized by the British in the year 1891. In 1953 Malawi, which was formerly known as Nyasaland was considered to be protectorate of the United Kingdom. The Federation was dissolved in the year 1963 after which in 1964, Malawi got its independence under Queen Elizabeth and also got its new name Malawi. It became a republic after a couple of years. The country has a multi-party and democratic government. It also has a small military force which includes a navy, an army and an air wing. The foreign policy of Malawi is pro-Western and comprises of positive diplomatic relations with most countries along with the participation in several international organizations. Malawi is considered to be among the least-developed countries in the world and its economy is mostly based on agriculture. The country has a large rural population. The Malawian government faces challenges in expanding as well as building the economy and simultaneously improving education, environmental protection, health care and becoming financially independent. The government has launched several programs that focus primarily on such issues which somehow led to the improvement in the outlook of the country and its education along with economic growth. As the economy is based largely on agriculture therefore more than one-third of GDP along with 90% of export revenues come from agriculture only. The economy was dependent on substantial economic aid from the World Bank along with the International Monetary Fund, before. When it comes to safest investment destination in the world, Malawi was put on the 119th in 2011 by Euro money Country Risk rankings.
