Lesotho is officially known as the Kingdom of Lesotho which is known to be the southernmost landlocked country in the world and is located in southern Africa. It is surrounded completely by South Africa. The total land area covered by the country is slightly more than 30,000 square kilometers in size and has a population over two million. Maseru is the capital as well as the largest city of Lesotho. Lesotho is also a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. About 40% of the population in this country is believed to liveunder the international poverty line of US Lesotho is the only independent state that lies entirely above 3,281 ft. in elevation, in the world and more than 80% of the country lies above 5,906 ft. Not only geographically, Lesotho is economically integrated with South Africa as well. The economy of this country is based largely on manufacturing, mining, agriculture and livestock along with depending heavily on the inflows of allowances and receipts of the workers from the Southern African Customs Union. Majority of population and household living in Lesotho subsist on the basis of farming. The western lowlands are considered to be the prominent agricultural zone and almost 50% of the population earn their livelihood wither through animal husbandry or informal crop cultivation. Lesotho is among the "Low Human Development" countries and ranks 160 of 187 on the Human Development Index according to UNDP. With the help of the African Growth and Opportunity Act, Lesotho has managed to become the largest exporter of garments from sub-Saharan Africa to the US. Some of the US retailers and brands sourcing from Lesotho include: Gap, Foot Locker, Gloria Vanderbilt, Saks, Sears, Levi Strauss, Timberland and Wal-Mart. In the mid-2004, over 50,000 workers mainly female workers were reported to be associated in this field and it was for the first time that government employees were outnumbered by manufacturing sector workers. In the year 2008 the country exported goods mainly to the United States that were worth 487 million dollars. In 2011, it was the largest formal sector employer in this country and as of 2007, the average earnings of an employee were $103 per month in the textile industry. In 2008, the average gross national income per capita was a monthly of $83dollars. Diamond and water are the most prominent natural resources in this country. Lesotho is quite self-sufficient in the production of electricity also.
