Ghana is officially called the Republic of Ghana. It is a unitary presidential constitutional democracy and a sovereign multinational state. The country is located along the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Guinea in the sub-region of West Africa. Ghana covers a total area of 238,535 square kilometers. Ghana shares its borders withthe Ivory Coast to the west, Togo in the east, Burkina Faso to the north and the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean on the south. The population of Ghana is approximately 27 million and they belong to a variety of ethnic as well as religious groups. The varied geography of the country includes forests, savannas, springs, mountains, cave systems, nature reserves and estuaries. The 560-kilometre coast of Ghana is dotted by culturally significant forts, castles and harbours. Before British Empire colonization in the early-20th century, Ghana was the site of various empires as well as kingdoms. The country became the first Sub-Saharan African nation in the year 1957 that declared independence from the European colonization. The country’s economy is the ninth-largest on the Africa continent in terms of purchasing power parity and nominal GDP. Ghana is also a major producer of natural gas and petroleum and has the fifth largest oil reserves and sixth largest natural gas reserves in the continent. As of 2015, Ghana is known to be one of the largest gold and diamond producers in the world along with being the largest producer of cocoa in the world. Ghana is known to be a country that is enriched with average natural resource possessing hydrocarbons, industrial minerals and precious metals. Ghana's growing economic prosperity along with its democratic political system has made the country a regional power in West Africa.Ghana is a member of the Economic Community, Non-Aligned Movement of West African States. In the entire African continent, Ghana Stock Exchange is considered to be the 5th largest and 3rd largest in Sub-Saharan Africa with has a market capitalization of GH¢ 57.2 billion or CN¥ 180.4 billion as of 2012. Based on its performance, The Ghana Stock Exchange was the 2nd best performing stock exchange in the year 2013 in Sub-Saharan Africa.Ghana is a middle income country where manufacturing constitute about 24 percent of the total GDP,services account for 50% of GDP, followed by extractive industries at 5% and taxes at 20.9%.Ghana is an emerging designated digital economy which is also mixed in nature which led to 8.7% GDP growth in the year 2012.
