Eritrea is officially known as the State of Eritrea and located in the Horn of Africa. Asmara is the capital of the country and it is bordered by Ethiopia in the west, Sudan in the west and Djibouti in the southeast. The eastern as well as northeastern parts of the countries have an extensive coastline along the Red Sea, across from Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The total area covered by the country is approximately 117,600 km2 and includes the Dahlak Archipelago along with a number of the Hanish Islands. The name Eritrea is based on the Greek name for the Red Sea. Eritrea has nine recognized ethnic groups and therefore it is safe to say that Eritrea is a multiethnic country. The population of the country is around six million. Most of the residents speak Afroasiatic languages. The Tigrinya community is believed to make up about 55% of the population. Most people in the territory follow either Islam or Christianity. The incorporation of independent Kingdoms and several vassal states of the Ethiopian empire lead ultimately to the creation of the modern day Eritrea. Eritrea became part of a federation with Ethiopia in the year 1947 but it led to the Eritrean War of Independence which puts and ends to the Eritrean independence in 1993. The economy has undergone considerable growth in recently, which is mainly indicated by an improvement in the GSP as of October 2012 at 7.5 percent over 2011. The commencement of full operations in silver and gold and silver Bisha mine along with the production of cement are mainly two responsible factors associated with the growth of the GDP. The real GDP as of 2009 is estimated to be $4.4 billion dollars whereas the annual growth rate as if 2011 is recorded at 14%. The country has an extensive amount of resources like gold, copper, granite, potash and marble. Since the war of independence, the economy has experienced major changes and in the year 2011, the GDP of the country grew by 8.7 percent thereby making it one of the fastest growing economies in the world. In spite of an ongoing war, the country managed to develop its transportation infrastructure by improving its ports, repairing war damaged roads, asphalting new roads. Construction of the coastal highway happens to be the most significant project among these. A rail line has been established between the capital of the country and the Massawa port but the services are still sporadic.
