CÔTE D'IVOIRE or Ivory Coast is officially known as Republic of CÔTE d’Ivoire. This country is situated in West Africa. Yamoussoukro is the capital of the country and the biggest city is Abidjan which is also known as the port city. The official language spoken by the people of this country is French and the religions they follow include Islam and Christianity, mainly. Guinea and Liberia are located to the west of this country and it shares its borders with Ghana in the east, Gulf of Guinea or Atlantic Ocean in the south and Burkina Faso and Mali in the north. CÔTE D'IVOIRE is divided into 12 districts and two autonomous cities at district level which were divided further into 31 regions and then sub divided into sub-prefectures and departments. Ivory Coast or CÔTE D'IVOIRE is a republic where the president enjoys strong executive power. The country was a home to several states after which the European Colonies made their impact on the culture and traditions of the country. Ivory Coast had to maintain close economical as well as political associations with the West African neighbours and at the same time, maintained close ties with the west such as France. The country was known to be the economic powerhouse in the West Africa due to the production of cocoa and coffee during the 1960s and 70’s. Ivory Coast’s income per Capita as of 2013 was estimated to be 1014.4 US dollars. The country plays a significant role in transit trade for landlocked and neighbouring countries. The country constitutes largest economy in the West African Economic and Monetary Union by comprising almost 40 percent of the total GDP of the monetary union. The country is known to be the fourth largest exporter of goods and largest exporter of cocoa beans. 2.53 billion dollars’ worth of cocoa exports was produced by the farmers in 2009. The 100,000 rubber farmers of the country, in 2012, earned a total of 105 million dollars. The main factors that contributed to the economic growth of the country includes diversification of agriculture mainly for export purposes, maintaining close ties with France and the encouraging foreign investment. CÔTE D'IVOIRE went through an economic crisis during the 1980’s mainly due to social and political turmoil. If we consider the current or the 21st century economic condition of the country, we will realize that Ivory Coast still relies to a great extent on agriculture and the economy is completely market-based.
