Republic of Congo which is also known as Congo Brazzaville or Congo Republic is situated in Central Africa and is bordered by Cameroon, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and Cabinda’s Angolan Exclave. The country was formerly a part of French colony of Equatorial Africa and it became the Republic of Congo after its independence in the year 1960. Several party elections have been held in this country since 1992 but finally a democratically elected government was overthrown in the Civil War in year 1997. The capital of the Republic of Congo, Brazzaville, is known to be located on the Congo River which lies in the southern part of the country. Due to the location of this country, the climate remains consistent throughout the year. As far as transportation of this country is considered, it includes water, land and air transportation. The railway networks of this country were built in the 1930’s. The country has two major international airports and 1000 KMs of paved roads exist as well. One can avail flights to several African cities as well as Paris from the international airports of the country. The country has ports along the Congo River. The largest port is known as Pointe Noire which is situated on the Atlantic Ocean. The economy of Republic of Congo is a perfect blend of handicrafts and village agriculture. The industrial sector of this country relies heavily on petroleum. Petroleum extraction has surpassed forestry as in the year 2008 oil extraction, solely accounted for 85 percent of the government revenue, 65% of the GDP and 92 percent of the exports. It is believed that Republic of Congo has untapped mineral wealth in large proportions. Rapidly rising oil revenues in the early 1980’s helped the government of Congo to finance some large scale development projects which helped to maintain the GDP growth at 5% annually. Despite the record high oil prices since the year 2003, the current administration of the country is facing economic problems of reducing poverty and stimulation recovery. Diamonds and natural gas are also one of the major exports. It is believed that Congo untapped mineral resources like gold, phosphate deposits and iron. In 2009, the government of the Republic of Congo has signed an agreement to lease 200,000 hectares of land to the South African farmers so that the dependency on the imports can be reduced.
