The Central African Republic is located in Central Africa and is a landlocked country bordered to the north by Chad, South Sudan to the east, to the west by Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Congo to the south and Sudan to the northeast. The country is believed to cover a total area of 620,000 square kilometers and the population was measured around 4.7 million in the year 2014. The country comprises of Sudano-Guinean savannas mostly but also includes a Sahelo-Sudanian zone in the north along with an equatorial forest zone in the south. Two thirds of the country is situated within the Ubangi River Basin and the remaining lies in the basin of Chari that ultimately flows into Lake Chad. The Central African Republic was inhabited for various millennia by the French who rules the country as a colony since the beginning of the late 19th century. The borders of this country were also established by France. The country gained its independence from France in the year 1960 and a bunch of autocratic leaders started ruling the country after that. Despite signing two peace treaties, one in 2007 and another in 2011, the Central African Republic Bush War commenced in the year 2004. The war took place between the Muslim and Christian factions and the government in 2012 which further leads to massive displacement in 2013 and 14. The country has significant mineral resources which includes uranium reserves, gold, crude oil, lumber, diamonds and hydropower but in spite of that it is still considered one of the poorest countries in the world. It ranked 185th out of 187 countries in Human Development Index. Diamond comprises of the most important export of the country which constitute about 40-55 percent of the total export revenues. The currency of the country is known as CAR Franc which is accepted in the former countries of the French West Africa. The annual real GDP growth of this country is marked just above 3 percent. The cultivation as well as the sale of food crops, like peanuts, millets, cassava, maize, sesame and sorghum dominates the agricultural sector. The per capita income of the country is considered to be one of the lowest in the world and is estimated to be around 400 dollars approximately in a year. The major hindrance in export trade is believed to be the low economic development along with the country’s landlocked nature.
