Located in Southern Africa, Botswana is a landlocked country and shares it border with South Africa in the south and south east, with Zimbabwe to the north east and Namibia to the north and west. It is a midsized country and has a population of 2 million. Gaborone being the largest and the capital of the country constitutes 10 percent of the overall population. The total land covered by this country is estimated approximately around 581,730 square kilometers which makes it the 48th largest country. Seventy percent of the total area is covered by Kalahari Desert. Apart from that the presence of savannas and grassland has resulted into a diverse wildlife. In the year 1964, the proposal for democratic self-government in Botswana was accepted by UK which led to the moving of seat of the government from Mafikeng in South Africa to Gaborone. In 1965 first general elections were held and in the year 1966, Botswana got its independence. The country is a member of Commonwealth of Nations, the Southern African Development Committee along with African Union. Since its independence, this country has always managed to maintain a representative democracy and also has a constant record of uninterrupted democratic elections. In the 1960’s Botswana was one of the poorest countries with a yearly GDP per capita of merely 70 US dollars. But it has completely transformed itself and now is considered one of the fastest growing economies in the world and has a GDP of 16,400 USD per year reported in the year 2013. People enjoy a moderate standard of living simply due to its high gross national income. It also has the fourth highest gross national income in Africa. Compared to any other African countries, Botswana has a lot of economic freedom as well. The industry of Botswana and the Ministry of Trade play an active part in promoting business development in the entire country. In order to maintain the currency of Botswana, the Bank of Botswana serves as the central bank. Botswana Pula is the currency of this country. The competitive banking system of this country is one of the most advanced in Africa. Increase in the foreign investments leads to privatization of the state owned companies and enterprises. It imports electricity and petroleum from South Africa. The regional headquarters of several international mining corporations are located in Botswana and it is believed that Orapa mine is the largest diamond mine in the entire world in terms of quantity and value of the carats produced in a year.
