The country of Algeria is the tenth largest country in the world with a population of 39, 500,000. Most of the country is covered with dessert which around 90%. The country is divided into 48 provinces, 553 districts and 1541 municipalities. Algiers is the most populous city and the capital of the country. Algeria has been the land of many ancient dynasties and cultures. Some of the most famous are the Ottomans, Romans, Byzantines, Abbasids, Phoenicians and the French Colonial Empire. Algeria has a Unitary semi-presidential republic as Abdul-Aziz Bouteflika as the President of the country since 1994. He was elected the President after he had won the election for four consecutive times. Since the country is mostly covered by dessert land, the economy is largely based on hydro carbon industry. A large amount of revenue is generated from this industry. It covers around 30% of the total GDP of the country and 60% of the budget revenues. The country supplies a huge amount natural gas to the European countries. It has the tenth largest natural gas reserve in the world. Energy export contributes to a major amount to its economical growth. Algeria belongs to the upper-middle class income group. The GDP (PPP) in the year 2014 was estimated at 551,720 billion USD with $14,256 as per capita income. The GDP (nominal) has been estimated up to 227,802 billion USD with $5,886 per capita income. Recently the Algerian Government has stopped the privatization of the state-owned industries and put a restriction on all the foreign involvement and imports in its economy. Driven by public spending in the field of public-work sector and construction, the economy of the nation grew by 2.6% since the year 2011. This steady growth in economy is expected to rise beyond 5% by the current year. Fishing is an upcoming and flourishing industry but it is a minor industry. In the agricultural sector, the major crops that are produced are the wheat, barley and potatoes, which are not enough to meet the demand in the country. But the mining industry generates good revenue as the land is rich in iron, zinc, copper, lead and mercury. Algeria’s tourism industry is a major setback due to the geographical condition and in efficient road and transport facilities. Though the country is facing numerous short term and long term problems, it is striving towards building a more economically, politically and financially strong nation in the coming years.
