Tender Details

The March Revolution of 1848 in Berlin was part of the European revolutions of 1848/49 and a central event in the history of German democracy. The uprising culminated in barricade fighting from March 18th to 19th. To date, the March Revolution is expressed in many European countriesreminded of demands for social justice, freedom, equality and democracy.

The revolutionaries created the Cemetery of the March Dead for the victims of the Berlin barricade fighting of March 1848. It is - and this is what makes it unique - both a product and a testament to the Maerzrevolution. The first dead of the 1918/19 revolution were also buried here.

The cemetery of those who died in March is a place where democratic traditions are formed, a place where European democracy is learned. For almost 175 years now, commemorations have been taking place at this unique location, becoming freedoms and human rights demanded and the revolutionaries remembered.

The Cemetery of the March Fallen is located in the southern part of the Volkspark Friedrichshain in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district of Berlin. The Volkspark Friedrichshain was created in 1846 as the first communal Parkanlage of the city.

For the planned new building, a building plot was created directly adjacent to the cemetery, which was previously part of the site of the neighboring clinic in Friedrichshain.

Today, the cemetery of those who died in March is a place to learn about democracy with a comprehensive range of educational opportunities...
