ZOA’s Local Agriculture for Nutrition in Education Value Chain (LANE VC) approach forges market linkages between local smallholder farmers to agrobusinesses to provide school children with nutritious, safe and delicious food, which is served each school day. This project builds on ZOA’s expertise in developing inclusive agricultural value chains. Farmers are supported to produce nutritious food and are trained in post-harvest handling to ensure food safety standards are met. Agro-enterprises then purchase this food and process and fortify the food with added protein and micro-nutrients to create delicious and nutritious school meals. This approach harnesses the potential of agro-enterprises to tackle the twin problems of child hunger and school absenteeism. A virtuous circle is created in which farmers improve their livelihoods by selling fresh produce to agro-enterprises who provide fortified school meals, thereby tackling child hunger and attracting children through the school gates and into the classroom.
