Description : The Legal Aid Commission wishes to reach a wider community than it currently does through its existing Legal Aid offices, by harnessing technology to enable people to access its services through a phone Helpline. Existing statistics show the majority of adults in Fiji have a mobile phone subscription, making the country ripe for this type of initiative.
Providing a toll-free legal aid advisory helpline will ensure that more people can benefit from access to legal professionals and their advice, in particular, the large number of Fijians living in outlying areas that cannot easily access Legal Aid offices.
The proposed Legal Aid Helpline is one measure to assist those who, for whatever reason, are unable or unwilling to physically come to a legal aid office. In an impoverished society, where people do not have the resources or the legal awareness, a toll-free Legal Aid Helpline provides an affordable and accessible way to provide legal advice and assistance to people outside of urban centres.
In particular, a toll-free helpline ensures easier, cheaper access to legal services for more people as they do not have to pay for either travel or advice. Experience has also shown that a phone service also makes the first contact to formal justice services seem more informal and approachable.
