Background and rationale
Adolescence is the second-most crucial period of a child`s life in terms of physical growth and cognitive development. It is a stage where up to 45% of skeletal growth takes place and 15-25% of adult height is achieved. It is also a last opportunity to reverse growth faltering experienced during childhood. In Bangladesh, good health and nutrition during this period is key to breaking the inter-generational cycle of undernutrition and ensuring later adult health and productivity. To improve Bangladesh`s stock of human capital, investments in youth are paramount. Thus, adequate nutrition during adolescent period provide an opportunity to support growth and skeletal development and a period to catch up on growth.
Recent data from the 2014 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) indicate that the nutritional status of adolescent girls is unsatisfactory in Bangladesh. There has been a decline in thinness (BMI-for-age z-score 1 SD) has risen by 6.5 percentage points (pp) during the same period. Anemia in adolescent girls is more prevalence in rural (40.4%) than urban (36.1%) areas.
