Nutrition Sensitive Value Chain Analysis (NSVCA)

Accelerating Healthy Agriculture and Nutrition (AHAN) Project

World Vision International (WVI) was awarded a grant from the European Union (EU) to lead a consortium of partners to implement their Accelerating Health Agriculture and Nutrition (AHAN) project under pillar three of the EU-s Partnership for Improved Nutrition in Lao People-s Democratic Republic (PDR). The AHAN Project aims to create supportive conditions for enhanced household (HH) nutrition. World Vision seeks a consultant to undertake a Nutrition-Sensitive Value Chain Analysis that will assist the AHAN project team in refining activities under SO1:Improved access to and availability of sufficient and/or diverse foods year round.

To address nutrition and food security gaps, the project-s NSA component (led by consortium partner, AVSF) will promote the intensification and diversification of crops and livestock production, and will improve productivity and profitability of small-scale agriculture through the establishment of farmer-s groups and market linkages. Enhanced production will feature small animal raising (e.g., crickets, frogs, chickens), home gardening, and improved post-harvest losses of staple crops along with safe processing and storage. These will aim to ensure that households consume food that are adequate, nutritious, diverse, wholesome, acceptable, safe, and affordable.

Nutrition-sensitive value chains (NSVCs) are a way of maximizing the contribution of sustainable agriculture to improved nutrition. Although inclusive value chain interventions have historically focused on increasing economic returns, the project acknowledges that they also play an important role in shaping food systems as they influence both food supply and demand. A nutrition-sensitive value chain is primarily aimed at increasing household production of more nutritious foods, which they can also consume, as well increasing household income through improved efficiency, value addition, greater sales and profits or employment generation. The resulting increase in income for VC households can then be used to improve their diets through increased purchases of food and non-food items linked to nutrition. Finally, by leveraging the potential of markets for nutrition, NSVC can catalyze improvements in the overall food environment. Acting on demand and supply can contribute to increased availability, affordability, safety, nutritional quality and acceptability of foods in the marketplace. This pathway broadens the impact to the wider set of consumers that can benefit from a more nutritious food system.

Therefore, the main objectives of this consultancy are:

· To identify primary and secondary crop options (including productive trees) that are suitable to the local context, are climate resilient and, have high nutrient as well as market value

· To identify opportunities for value-addition which could be introduced through subsequent activities, such as improved post-harvest and storage

· To analyse the potential opportunities and constraints along the value-chain for each of the selected crops and the project-identified livestock, with consideration to the products- commercial and nutrition impact to households and communities

· To recommend methods for enhancing production and (local) acceptability of the selected crops and livestock

Interested individual or team candidates are requested to submit an expression of interest, including:

· Technical proposal · Indicative timeline · CVs of Lead and team members

· Indicative budget of USD 15, 000 maximum, excluding international travel cost, accommodation and travel expenses during field work (e.g. vehicle rental), and supplies
