BACKGROUNDThe Constitution of Liberia guarantees Equal Rights for all (men and women) under the law; including the rights of women equal participation in governance and decision making atall levels of the society, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status and religion. Therefore, gender equality is critical for good governance, as it ensures the effective participation of women and men in all aspects.Women of Liberia were denied the right to vote and excluded from politics, until, in 1948, when these rights were given; due to traditional and cultural barriers, low level of education, lack of confidence and several other factors affected the participation and inclusion of women in public life and political process in Liberia.The promotion of women`s political participation is in line with international and regional gender related protocols, conventions and declarations to which Liberia is signatory.
