BACKGROUNDWith the assistance of the Peace Building Support Office (PBSO) of the United Nations through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Government has embarked upon a series of reform processes and initiatives including transitional justice processes. In the same vein, the Government is also taking further steps to fully realize the fundamental human rights of all persons. As a result, the Government seeks to put in place strong frameworks, to uphold the highest standards of respect for human rights, the rule of law and justice, within the framework of the transitional justice process. To achieve this objective, the government intends to developa National Human Rights Policy document. The design and implementation is expected to provide a concrete framework to realise the government`s human rights goals and priorities taking in to account the Constitution, relevant national, regional and international human rights treaties, and policies, with an opportunity for the Gambia to review its human rights` needs.Its development and implementation also aims to not only raise awareness among government officials, security agencies, civil society organisations and the public about human rights, but also provide strategic direction to the implementation of human rights in The Gambia.
