Description : Background
Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being at all ages is essential to sustainable development. The Malaysian health system has made significant strides in improving health outcomes, notably the reduction of child and maternal mortality as well as communicable diseases at large. At the same time, HIV and AIDS continue to rank as second highest causes of communicable diseases mortality following tuberculosis.
Sexual health needs including sexuality are not sufficiently addressed in particular among young people. Same sex behaviors are criminalized and therefore individuals do not come forward to seek sexual health related services and HIV/STI prevention. In addition the increasing trend in the use of stimulant drugs will have implications both for the transmission of HIV and other STI.
Modelled estimates indicate that the sustained efforts made by government and NGO stakeholders have significantly reduced the rate of HIV infections from some 20, 000 infections in 1991 to an estimated 5, 700 annual infections in 2016. In 2018, there were about 87, 122 people living with HIV. The impact of the harm reduction programme is remarkable, with HIV infection rates having fallen dramatically from 66% in 2005 to 13.8% in 2017 among people who inject drugs.
