Description : BACKGROUND

In 2016, WHO released the new Global Health Sector Strategies on HIV, STI and Hepatitis, alongside with, the new treatment guidelines on three STIs, namely, Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia and Syphilis. Eleven PICs that are recipient of the Global Fund grant and updated their own national guidelines on HIV testing services, ART, STI and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) based on the new WHO strategies, recommendations and treatment guidelines with technical support from WHO and other regional technical partners. WHO supports an additional three PICs that are not covered under the Global Fund programme in the prevention and management of HIV/STIs.

It is important that these country initiatives are translated into enhanced standards through provision of quality services and better patient access to these services. Thus, it is important that continuous technical support is provided to PICs in implementing services according to these guidelines.

The current GF support to the eleven PICs ends December 2020, and these PICs are intending to submit a funding request to the Global Fund 2020-2022 funding cycle to continue support the integrated TB/HIV programmes during second quarter of 2020 and as well as reviewing and updating their HIV/STIs National Strategic Plans (NSPs) for the period 2020-2025.
