FE 77.0518 / 2019 Sustainable promotion of cycling in winter through optimized winter service Promoting sustainable mobility and reducing pollution in dIn cities, cycling is of considerable importance. There are still significant potentials for environmentally friendly modal shift. In recent years, cycling in the winter has increased noticeably, as more and more people use the bicycle year-round as a means of transport.

However, the conditions for cycling in the winter are currently usually very bad. The GefaeHarvesting for cyclists is significantly higher than in summer. The design of some cycling facilities is unfavorable for the traffic in the winter or for the implementation of the winter service. Goals of the project are:

- Recommendations for the practical implementation of the winter service on cycle paths, combined bike paths and sidewalks, lanes with designated cycling lanes and protective strips for cycling,

- Strategic conception and criteria for the Designation of a safe motorable and easy-to-maintain cycle path networkin winter,

- Recommendations for the winter service-friendly planning and design of bicycle facilities.

Within the scope of the research project, the problems (including partial environmental reservations against ice floes, snow clearing without discrimination of other road users) should be analyzed and possible solutions developed. Various known or new methods for carrying out the winterservices are to be analyzed specifically for use on cycle paths and evaluated in a differentiated manner by means of cost-benefit analyzes with regard to the desired extended use of the bicycle.
