Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading

Context:

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) with support from the United States Agency for

International Development (USAID) is implementing an Integrated Emergency Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Response and Prevention of Gender Based Violence (GBV)” program. The aim is to increase access to safe, equitable and adequate WASH services by responding to, mitigating and preventing Gender based Violence (GBV). The program hopes to among others contribute to responding to the health, psychosocial and economic needs of those affected.

Under the particular response from the psychological perspective, the program has delivered an MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) program to 45 people working directly with GBV survivors. Participants were divided into 3 groups of 15 people, 2 of the groups are from one local NGO working with GBV survivors and HIV (some of this participants are GBV survivors themselves and HIV positive). The 3rd group is a mix of social workers who work for diverse national NGO working as well with children and adult GBV survivors.

As it is in its original format, the MBSR program was delivered in 8 sessions in order to teach mindfulness, a self observation practice and mental training that seeks to promote well being. MBSR was created by Jon Kabat Zinn in the University of Massachusetts Medical School. It gives participants the possibility to develop a different relationship with stress, derived from different events such a work, vicarious victimization or violence.

This training was built on the Community based psychosocial approach to help them deal with stress caused by the work they do, as well as for choosing key participants to do a Trauma Informed Mindfulness Training of Trainers, thus participants will have an insight into mindfulness based psychosocial techniques for case management and common psychosocial distress in the population, such as depression, anxiety and stress management, while orienting them with psychosocial support (PSS) activities.
