Tender Details

Tenders are invited for Consultant, Expert in the SAFE Systems Approach Applied to Human-Wildlife Conflicts for the Formulation of the Project Integrated and Sustainable Management of the Protected Landscape Area of ??PONASI-Revival.

background

Burkina Faso is an arid country of 27.4 million hectares with a population of 18.2 million people growing at a rate of 3% per year. The main economic sector is agriculture; however, the country faces many challenges in generating growth and distributing social goods to a population deprived of income with low levels of human development. The country is rich in biodiversity, with a wide variety of ecosystems including 2, 394 species of fauna (insects, amphibians, wild and domestic animals) and 1, 407 species of flora. The country is still home to viable populations of many great species emblematic of African wildlife that have virtually disappeared from the rest of West Africa, including Africa's largest elephant population.

The PONASI Complex, which is the subject of this project, includes a large area in south-central Burkina Faso dominated by parks and protected areas (PA). Located in the transitional landscape of the savannah of the Sudanese zone of Burkina Faso, the term "PONASI" combines the names of the three most important protected sites that compose it, namely Pô, Nazinga and Sissili ("PO-NA-SI "). With the surrounding areas, the Complex consists of a landscape - hereinafter referred to as the PONASI Landscape, a key feature of which is the presence of the second largest elephant range in the country, which is shared with a neighboring country, Ghana. A larger panoramic setting of PONASI - and its complex - is being managed as part of this proposed project.

The PONASI Complex is classified as Important Bird Area (IBA) and work is underway to designate this area as a Ramsar site. The complex is home to at least 39 species of mammals, including antelopes such as the roan antelope, the elephant, the sing-sing antelope, the orbee, the reed and buffalo kelp, the lion, the buffalo, and the warthog, crocodiles, hyenas and primates such as red monkeys, baboons and grivets. It is also home to at least 275 species of birds, including hornbills, hawks and herons.

The long-term solution for managing the PONASI complex and its area of ??influence is to apply a landscape management approach to ensure the integrity of landscape-level ecosystem services and the richness of biodiversity, by introducing a a series of sustainable management practices that will have multiple benefits.

The goal of the project is to safeguard critical wildlife habitat, biodiversity and ecosystem services in the PONASI protected area complex through integrated landscape management that generates multiple benefits. The project will achieve this goal by stabilizing land use, strengthening biodiversity conservation measures and safeguarding a flow of ecosystem services, thus generating overall environmental benefits supported by the associated generation of socio-economic benefits. national and local levels. It will promote integrated and sustainable management of the PONASI Protected Area Complex and surrounding landscapes, covering 952 000 ha
