Description : BACKGROUND

Tonga has made significant strides in strengthening tobacco control such as increasing taxes on tobacco products in recent years. However, the availability of locally grown tobacco products that are under-regulated has the potential to undermine fiscal measures to reduce demand for tobacco products. There is limited information about the acceptability of alternative crop substitution for local tobacco farmers and the extent to which locally grown tobacco is cultivated, processed and sold in Tonga and the impact the recent tax on this type of tobacco has had on farmers.
