United Nations Development Program Office Costa Rica Background and justification Through resolution 2018/8 of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, it was decided that, at its sixty-fourth session, in 2020, the Commission of the United NationsThe Status of Women would review and evaluate the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly, including an assessment of the current challenges affecting the Implementation of the Platform for Action and the achievement of equalityof gender, as well as the empowerment of womenand their contribution to the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (paragraph 1). The Council called upon all States to carry out comprehensive national reviews of the progress made and the difficulties encountered in the implementation of the Declaration and Platform for Action of thee Beijing and the results of the twenty-third specialsession of the General Assembly. The regional commissions were also encouraged to conduct regional reviews so that the results of intergovernmental processes at the regional level could be used in the review that the Commission on the Status of Women performsin 2020, during its sixty-fourth session (para.2). It also strongly encouraged the Governments to continue tosupport the role and contribution of civil society, in particular non-governmental organizations and women's organizations, as well as national human rights institutions, where they exist, in the implementation of the DecBeijing Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly, and in this regard called upon Governments to work with relevant stakeholders at all levels of preparations for the 2020 review in order to to take advantage of their experience and knowledge (p...
