THE PROJECT TITLE AND ID: Promoting Nutrition-Sensitive WASH Self-Sufficiency on Bonthe Island-
Detailed description:
The project ‘Promoting nutrition-sensitive WASH self-sufficiency on Bonthe Island- is funded by BMZ and Welthungerhilfe and implemented by SEND SL in partnership with WASAP a social business enterprise 01/12/2018 to 31/12/2021. It responded to the demand in Sierra Leone, where about 50% of households are subject to food insecurity, in rural areas even 60%. In Bonthe Island, the project location, food insecurity deteriorated in the past decade, against a positive trend in the country prior to inception of the project. Only 55% of women in Bonthe District have access to a sufficiently diversified diet (Minimum Dietary Diversity) and about 6.3% of children receive the minimum acceptable diet. Thus, stunting is widespread and reaching 31.4%. Major water, sanitation and hygiene challenges in Sierra Leone are the low levels of use of basic sanitation services, access to safe/quality drinking water and inadequate use of safe hygiene practices by children and their families. Baseline data indicate that about 60% of the Bonthe Island population are using water for household consumption from unprotected sources such as streams or ponds. Open defecation is widespread and 57, 7% of the people are practising it. In an assessment 48.6% consider access to clean drinking water as top priority, while 79% mentioned the access to savings and credits as an urgent demand to improve their livelihoods and reducing their vulnerability. In general, the approach of the GoSL is to NOT target villages with less than 150 people with WaSH services. Thus, these settlements remain widely unserved with WaSH facilities, further the physical access to the community limit service provision from NGOs.
