Role

Bioversity International is seeking a talented and motivated Communications Specialist who can drive forward strategic and effective communications to increase the understanding and awareness of Bioversity International and its work in Eastern and Southern Africa to deliver scientific evidence, management practices and policy options to use and safeguard agricultural and tree biodiversity to attain sustainable global food and nutrition security. The appointee will serve as part of the organization’s Communication Team whose role is to provide strategic communications targeted to the policy, scientific, development and donor community to raise the profile of the organization and to create an enabling environment to achieve funding opportunities and effective partnerships.

Key responsibilities

Based at Bioversity’s Office in Kampala, Uganda, the appointee will work under the guidance of the Director of External Engagement based at our Headquarters in Rome, and the Representative for Eastern and Southern Africa based in Uganda implementing the following:

· Complete the drafted country engagement strategy and contribute to drafting an implementation plan for the Uganda Office under the supervision of the External Engagement Team including:

· Identifying priority communications goals and audiences, and creating donor profiles for existing and potential donors which identify converging areas of mutual benefit.

· Prepare materials to promote the work of Bioversity International in Uganda including a brochure detailing the impact of our work, and a set of factsheets about specific research areas.

· Support Uganda staff to engage and interact with partners by preparing communication materials including presentations and other supporting materials.

· Support Uganda staff to communicate effectively about their work and the wider work of the organization, and ensure that all communications outputs follow institutional branding and messaging.

· Support staff to present and adapt Bioversity International messages to different audiences with a specific focus on donors.

· Support the organization and communications around key events including but not limited to a visit by the Bioversity International Board of Trustees, the Annual Farmers’ Field Day, and donor meetings.

· Write a series of four blog posts for the Bioversity International website, and send at least two social media posts per month to HQ, to promote strategic areas of our work in Uganda, and ensure that the Uganda webpage and staff bios are kept up to date.

· Reach out to key journalists and other media contacts to reach targeted audiences, respond to media queries and manage media contacts in Uganda.

· Attend regular virtual meetings with the External Engagement Team at HQ, and regular virtual meetings with the Rome-based supervisor, and possible face-to-face meetings with travel as required.

· Other support as needed

Qualifications and competencies

Essential qualifications & competencies:

· University degree of equivalent qualifications in communications, marketing or other related field

· Minimum of 5 years progressive experience in communications and resource mobilization within an international research-for-development environment

· Experience working with media contacts in Uganda

· Experience writing, editing and proofreading communications materials

· Experience of developing communications products written in a clear compelling way that are intended for resource mobilization purposes

· Excellent command of the English language both verbal and written

· Well-developed personal organization, time management and priority-setting skills, as well as detail orientation

· Service oriented

· Ability to work with a high degree of independence within assigned areas complemented by sound judgement, initiative, adaptability and flexibility

· Strong interpersonal communications and teamwork skills including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of different cultural and national backgrounds.

Desirable qualifications and competencies:

· Able to use graphic design products to lay out basic materials such as presentations and factsheets – PowerPoint, Publisher, Photoshop, InDesign.

· Web content editing experience preferably in Typo-3
