F001b: Fire Prevention - Forestry F010ba: Forestry Services - Pruning, Felling, Seeding, Etc. 5114C: Excavating and Earthmoving Work F010b: Forestry Services, Not Elsewhere Specified Response Submission: Agriculture and Forestry 9505 Beaverhill Road Lac La Biche Ab T0a 2C0 Attention: Nancey Havenga Rfp Number: 19Tdrafd981 Closing Date & Time: 14:00:59 Alberta Time, December 4, 2018 Response Contact: Havenga, Nancey Wildfire Ranger Lac La Biche Fire Centre 9505 Beaverhill Road Lac La Biche, Ab T0a 2C0 Tel: (780)623-5275 Fax: (780)623-2570 Email: Nancey.Havenga@Gov.Ab.Ca Opportunity Description: Project Background - All Field-Based Forest Genetics and Tree Improvement Research Projects Are Usually Conducted on More Than One Site. the Purpose is to Replicate the Same Test Populations on Sites with Different Environmental Conditions to Allow Us to Separate Environmental and Genetic Causes of Observed Differences in Tree Mortality, Growth and Response to Both Environmental and Biological Factors. in Alberta, Field Research Experiments Intended to Provide Data for Breeding Program that Produce Seed for Reforestation on Public Land Requires a Minimum of Three Test Sites. Research Intended to Provide Information for Regulating Seed Transfer Requires More Sites (Five Considered a Minimum) and the Lead Researcher May Determine the Desirable Number Depending on the Purpose of the Research and Prior Knowledge from Existing Experiments. These Sites Are Normally Less Than 20 Ha (Some Old Trials May be Larger Than This); They have Reservation Numbers; and Are Fenced to Prevent Them from Unauthorized Access and Damage to Experimental Trees. Individual Experiments Inside the Fence Are Owned by the Alberta Government And/Or Government-Industry Cooperatives. Signs Are Posted on These Sites to Differentiate Experimental Plots from Natural Forest Stands in the Area. Project Objectives- Clear the Guard that is Currently Around the Site. It Appears that the Site Was Expanded Towards the East some But is Still Within the Original Guards. the Pictures that will Follow This Write up will Support This Recommendation. the Surrounding Forest Cover is Mixed Wood with Predominate Deciduous Component. the Guards Around the Genetic Site Itself have Started to Grow Back in a Bit with Aspen, But Are Still Fairly Clear for the Most Part. the West Side and Portions of Both the North and South have Recently Been Bladed Down for some Form of Industrial Access. This Freshly Cleared Area Would Allow for Access Around the Site As Well As Aid in Preventing a Fires Spread Into the Actual Site. if a Fire Were to Advance on the Genetic Site, Besides a Few Pockets that May Flare Due to Conifer Present, Most of the Fire Spread Would be Through Surface Advancement. Having a Bared Area of Guard to Protect the Site Would be Sufficient Protection. Agriculture and Forestry
