Tender Details

Context athlone municipal district is in the process of completing a major enhancement and regeneration project in the church street area of athlone. The transformative redevelopment scheme, which is supported under the eu urban designated fund, aims to revitalise the heart of athlone both aesthetically and in terms of accessibility, supporting the sustained and future growth of the town. Church street provides an important link between the historic shannon area of athlone and our contemporary civic square and athlone--s retail offering. The church street area will be enhanced to ensure that the wonderful heritage and traditional character of this architectural conservation area with its independent shops, cafés, restaurants and bars can flourish. A new public space at custume place will provide a greatly improved image of church street when approaching from the heritage/ shannon area of the town. This will include a plaza area complete with street furniture, bicycle stands and street lighting, as well as planters with flower beds, foliage and native trees. nAtural native materials, including granite and irish blue limestone will be used throughout. Brief, the commissioner invites proposals for an innovative piece of sculpture which addresses the following: the arts in athlone town--s urban context the location of the artwork in relation to its environs, in particular the river shannon and the cycleway (see appendix 1) the heritage, memory and environment of athlone the work of art commissioned will have the potential to engage with the town in a dynamic way. The work does not have to be figurative in its interpretation of the themes suggested, more abstract interpretations are also welcome once their context speaks to the brief provided, and its urban setting.
