Description : Design Codes are planning tools which provide detailed advice and guidance in the design of new development. The Codes, are prescriptive in that they describe `design requirements` (sometimes referred to as `rules`) that development should adhere too. This ranges from general guidance - how buildings should connect to streetscapes and roadways, and open space provision, for example - through to requirements for built form, i.e. the scale and form of buildings that are permitted as well as the materials used. The over-arching aim of this project is to understand how the historic environment has been reflected in Design Codes, drawing conclusions from examples of good and bad practice, and to develop a Design Code for the historic environment.
