UK Government announces radioactive monitoring project Computer Hardware and Software Services

CGI an independent information technology and business process services firm has been awarded with a four-year contract by the UK Government to manage application support services to the Radioactive Incident Monitoring Network (RIMNET 3). CGI will be subjected to make sure that critical monitoring services are available should a likely nuclear event occur overseas, facilitating UK authorities to examine incidents and correspond to any needed emergency response.

The UK government's national radiation monitoring and nuclear emergency response system RIMNET 3, was set up after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, as part of its provisions for handling with the effects of overseas nuclear incidents within the UK.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), as the lead government commission for overseas nuclear incidents, integrates the government’s feedback to accidents and inspect the operation of the RIMNET system, which was instrumented by the Met Office.

Support services will be delivered from CGI’s service centre in South Wales, which will include application management, security management, facilities management and support services, in partnership with SME CC Engineering for hardware break-fix services.

According to the Energy Minister, Baroness Verma – The expertise and experience of CGI and Met Office in the development of Radiation Incident Monitoring Network (RIMNET) system, plays an important role in UK’s national radiation monitoring and nuclear emergency response portfolio.
