KFAED signs KD 7m loan agreement with Chad

Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) recently signed a loan amounting to KD 7 million (USD 23.8 million) with the Republic of Chad for financing the irrigation projects in Chad Lake and Bahr El Gazal provinces in Chad.

In a press statement, the fund revealed that the signing ceremony took place Thursday in Chad’s capital – N’Djamena. The fund was represented by Regional Manager for West African Countries Thamer Al-Failakawi and its Deputy Director General Hamad S. Al-Omar, while Chad’s government was represented by Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Issa Doubrari.

The objective of the project is to support the economic and social development works at Lake Chad and Bahr El Gazal regions by providing water to irrigate about 1,684 hectares of agricultural land from two water sources – Lake Chad and ground water wells. This will increase production, augment the farmers’ income, and support the government’s food security strategy.

The project includes civil and electromechanical works aimed at developing agricultural land and to construct five water irrigation systems as follows: Talia (1,227 hectares) and Yaola (350 hectares) areas in Lake Chad Region, and Hamatiya site (23 hectares), Hamatiya site (65 hectares) and Hamatiya site (19 hectares) in Bahr El Gazal Region.

This is in addition to the construction of sand dikes, pump stations, irrigation canals, field access roads, ground water wells equipped with pumps and distribution networks.

The project also includes consulting services for the preparation of a detailed design, tender documents, project supervision and management.

This is the sixth loan that the fund granted to the Republic of Chad, as it had earlier given five loans for financing projects in various sectors at a total amount of KD 16.2 million.

The fund also provided the republic with one grant of KD 14,900 ($50,320 thousand), as well as two grants from the government of the State of Kuwait – one in 1990 amounting to KD 760,000 ($2.58 million) for a water supply project and another under the Goodwill Fund amounting to KD 1.1 million ($3.74 million).
