The Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA) has awarded a contract to construct a new $20 million (Dhs76 million) substation in Jumeirah to satisfy the increasing demand for electricity in the region.

The new 132/11kV substation is one among the series of development projects held by DEWA to boost up the city’s power capacity.

No specific details were revealed about who the contract was awarded to and the project’s completion date.

The project will raise DEWA’s networks capacity to transfer electricity to Jumeirah and results in efficient and reliable networks throughout these demanding areas and assures continual and stable supply to all the consumers 24/7. Dubai’s construction plans and goals for economic growth are likely to be supported by these stations, as they engage the latest digital substation technologies which is much reliable and efficient in nature, says, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA.

To meet up the increasing electricity requirement across the Emirate, a number of substations has been commissioned by DEWA.

The Dubai Airport Free Zone (DAFZ), Dhs118 million substation already commissioned by the utility provider earlier this year. The substation has a capacity of 150 megavolt ampere (MVA) and was constructed at the value of Dhs86 million, DEWA commented.

To cater to Dubai’s energy demands, DEWA also launched a new Dhs500 million Warsan Complex and Al Qusais Control Centre earlier this year. Covering around 650,159 sq ft, the Warsan Complex consists two transmission and distribution control centres and an administrative building which can occupy up to 2,350 employees.

The Al Qusais Control Centre includes distribution, planning, and coordination departments, a library, the distribution R&D department, a simulator, and on-site distribution management.

According to DEWA officials, Dubai’s electricity consumption is likely to increase by 20 per cent as the emirate gears up to host Expo 2020.
