Caddell Construction receives $110 million contract for Nuclear Power Training Facilities at Joint Base Charleston Education

Alabama-based Caddell Construction Co. has been awarded by Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast a $110 million firm-fixed-price contract for construction of nuclear power training facilities for Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) Charleston at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina.

The scope of work involves construction of a new multi-story, training operation facility, construction of a single story secured area entry control point and build up of an extension for the north pier.

According to Capt. Robert E. Hudson, commanding officer of NPTU Charleston - The Navy’s dedication to provide a modern training facility will assist us encourage the professional pride and technical perfection we expect of our present and future nuclear operators.

The NPTU Charleston’ mission is to characterize Naval officers and enrolled personnel in the operation, maintenance and supervision of naval nuclear propulsion plants in support of Fleet operations. Around six months of practical instruction under the close supervision of qualified staff is required for the training and certification. Presently NPTU Charleston trains and certifies about half of the personnel (officer and enrolled) required to handle the U.S. Navy's reactor plants on nuclear-powered warships (i.e., all commissioned submarines and aircraft carriers). The other half are trained at a related facility in Ballston Spa, New York. This construction project assists modernization and extension of the facilities at NPTU Charleston and is a major part of the Navy's comprehensive strategy to energetically reinvest in the exclusive nuclear training pipeline.

The contract also includes underemployed choices and designed modifications, which if practiced and/or issued would improve the overall contract value to $157.8 million. The options covers the restoration of a present multi-story training support building and the construction of an additional new multi-story, training support facility. The contract also facilitates for furniture, fixtures, and equipment in the two designed modifications.

The project is in Goose Creek, South Carolina and is due to be done by June 2018.
