The Zurich- based power and automation technology group, ABB has won an order costing around $78 million from Saudi Electricity Company (SEC).

ABB will provide transformers for two new combined.cycle power plants that will enhance transmission capacity around the capital, Riyadh, and nearby areas of the Central Region.

The order was placed in the second quarter of this year. The company will provide generator step-up (GSU) transformers, power transformers and station service transformers for SEC’s combined- cycle power plants.

According to Bernhard Jucker, head of ABB’s Power Products division - More electricity to spread across consumers and match up demanding industrial and household need in the region will be facilitated by the availability of these transformers. The power infrastructure development in Saudi Arabia will be backed by our efforts.

Saudi Arabia aims to enhance power-generation capacity by more than 50 per cent by 2020 – from less than 60GW to approximately 91GW and in the future term, Saudi Arabia’s vision is to double up the present capacity output.

An increase in population and industrial growth led by petrochemicals, raised the electricity demand within the nation.

ABB’s transformer portfolio consists power transformers graded up to 1,200 kV, dry- and liquid-distribution transformers, traction and special application transformers as well as interlinked services and components.
