Moldova is a landlocked country which is located in Eastern Europe and is landlocked between Ukraine on the north, south and east and Romania on the west. The capital of the country is Chisinau. Moldova declared its independence in the year 1991 as part of the dissolution of the Soviet Union followed by adoption of a new constitution in 1994. The largest part of the country lays between the two rivers namely the Prut and the Dniester. The western border of this country is formed by the Prut river which assimilates in to the Danube before flowing into the Black Sea. Most of the country is hilly and even though it is closely located to the Black Sea, the country is still rendered landlocked. Between 1st and the 7th centuries A.D, the territories of this country were inhabited by Dacian tribes. It was invaded several times in early middle ages and late antiquity period because of its strategic location. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the country saw a distinct decline in the agriculture as well as industrial output and the size of the service sector in this country’s economy has ended up dominating its GDP and stands at more than 60% currently. However, in spite of that, Moldova still remains the poorest country in Europe. Moldova is a parliamentary republic and is a member state of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation. It also aspires to join the European Union. The economy of this country has strongly recovered from the drought-related contraction in the year 2012. Even though there was a decline of 0.7 percent in the economy as of 2012, the economy expanded by 8.9 percent in one year which was made possible due to the private consumption and exports, strong rebound in agriculture and related industries. Moldova is known for its wineries. For several years winemaking and viticulture in Moldova were the general occupation of most of the people living there. The historical documents, memorials and folklore provide evidence of this. Moldova has a properly established wine industry and has a vineyard area of around 147,000 hectares, out of which 102,500 hectares are used solely for commercial production. Most of the wine production of the country is made for export.
