Poland is officially known to be the Republic of Poland. It is a country which is located in Central Europe and is bordered to the west by Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south, on the east by Ukraine and Belarus along with the Baltic Sea, Kaliningrad Oblast and Lithuania to the north. The total area covered by the country is 312,679 square kilometers. It is the 71st largest country in the world and the 9th largest in Europe. The population of the country is over 38.5 million people and it is the 34th most populous country in the world apart from being the sixth most populous member of the European Union, and the most populous post-communist member of the European Union. Poland is a unitary state which is divided into 16 administrative subdivisions. The history of the country can be traced back to 966, when Mieszko I who was the ruler of a territory roughly coextensive with that of present-day Poland, converted to Christianity. The Kingdom of Poland was believed to be founded in 1025. Nazi Germany invaded Poland during World War II along with the Soviet Union. During the Revolutions of 1989, the Communist government of Poland was overthrown and the country adopted a new constitution establishing itself as a democracy. In spite of suffering vast casualties and destruction during the Second World War, the country still managed to preserve much of its cultural wealth. According to UNESCO world Heritage, there are 14 heritage sites and 54 Historical Monuments in Poland. Poland has achieved a very high ranking in terms of human development since the end of the communist period. The country has shown economic freedom as well. Poland is considered to be the sixth largest economy in the European Union along with being the fastest rising economic states in the world. The country is also the sole member nation of the European Union that hasescaped a decline in GDP. In recent years, it was able to create probably the most varied GDP growth in its history. Poland is also known to be one of the safest countries in the entire world according to the Global Peace Index for 2014. The high-income economy of the country is considered to be one of the healthiest of the post-Communist countries and one of the fastest growing as well within the European Union. Poland has a strong domestic market along with low private debt, flexible currency. It is not dependent on a single export sector either. In fact, Poland is the only European economy to have avoided the late-2000s recession.
